Caught in the transitional period between the departure of Mick Taylor and the official hiring of Ronnie Wood, Black and Blue is the sound of the Stones loosening up and finding a new groove. Heavily influenced by the reggae and funk sounds dominating the mid-70s, it gave us the hypnotic, disco-adjacent strut of 'Hot Stuff' and the gorgeous, world-weary ballad 'Memory Motel.' It’s less of a straight-ahead rock record and more of a deeply rhythmic, late-night jam session. The analog mix is incredibly punchy—Charlie Watts' drums sound absolutely massive on this pressing.
